Although titanium alloys provide excellent physical properties in structural applications, their thermal properties pose significant challenges during the machining phase. Titanium has very low thermal conductivity (approx. 21.9 W/m·K for Grade 5, compared to 50 W/m·K for mild steel).
During subtractive CNC operations, the heat generated by the cutting edge does not dissipate through the metal chips. Instead, it concentrates directly on the cutting tool’s tip. Temperatures can quickly reach up to 1000°C, accelerating tool wear.
